Serving Greater Phoenix: Cleaning and Repairing Pools Since 2008 |

Your pool filter is the single hardest-working piece of equipment in your backyard, and it’s the first thing to fall behind in Scottsdale’s climate. Fine desert dust, wind-blown debris from surrounding washes and landscaping, and heavy seasonal pollen all get pulled through your filter media every time your pump cycles. Add in monsoon season, and a filter that should be cleaned every few months can end up clogged, high-pressure, and struggling to keep your water clear in half that time.
Captain Pools provides professional pool filter cleaning throughout Scottsdale and the surrounding gated and HOA-governed communities where pool appearance is often part of the neighborhood standard. Whether you run a cartridge, DE (diatomaceous earth), or sand filter, we disassemble, deep-clean, inspect, and reassemble your system so it’s filtering at full capacity, not just rinsed off and put back.
A pool filter’s job is simple: trap everything the water shouldn’t be carrying. In Scottsdale, that job gets harder for a few local reasons:
The result: filters in Scottsdale often need cleaning more frequently than manufacturer guidelines assume, especially for homes near open desert, wash areas, or newly landscaped lots.
The most common filter type in newer Scottsdale builds and HOA communities. We remove and inspect each pleated cartridge, deep-clean the folds where fine dust and oils accumulate, and check for torn or collapsed pleats that reduce filtration surface area. A cartridge that looks “fine” from the outside can still be running at a fraction of its rated flow if the pleats are packed with sediment.
DE systems deliver the finest filtration available for residential pools, but that fine filtration means the grids clog faster and need more careful servicing. We break down the filter, strip and inspect each grid for tears or degraded fabric, fully clean out old DE powder, and recharge the system with the correct DE load for your tank size.
Sand filters are lower-maintenance day-to-day, but the media itself compacts and channels over time, letting water bypass the sand rather than filtering through it. We perform a full backwash service, check media condition, and inspect the multiport valve and laterals for signs of channeling or media breakdown that a backwash alone won’t fix.
If you’re seeing more than one of these, your filter, not your chemicals, is likely the actual problem.
We check your filter type, current pressure reading, and general condition before opening anything up.
Cartridges, DE grids, or sand filter internals are removed and inspected individually.
Media is thoroughly cleaned (not just rinsed) using techniques appropriate to the filter type, removing embedded dust, oils, and scale.
We inspect O-rings, gaskets, grids, laterals, and the multiport valve for wear that a cleaning alone won’t resolve.
The filter is rebuilt, DE is recharged where applicable, and the system is restarted with a documented starting pressure so you can track when the next cleaning is due.
We’re a Hayward Authorized Warranty Station, so if we find a component issue during your filter cleaning, a cracked cartridge frame, a failing multiport valve, or a torn DE grid, we can flag it and handle any Hayward warranty-eligible repair correctly the first time.
Filter cleaning and filter repair aren’t the same service, and it’s worth knowing which one you need:
During every filter cleaning, we’ll tell you honestly which category your system falls into. We won’t recommend a repair you don’t need, and we won’t call a repair job a “cleaning.”
If you’re on a weekly pool cleaning plan, your technician already does routine visual filter checks, skimming, and chemical balancing as part of that service. Filter cleaning is a separate, periodic deep-service, pulling the filter apart to clean or recharge the media itself. Weekly service keeps your pool balanced week to week. Filter cleaning keeps the filtration system underneath actually performing at capacity. Most Scottsdale pools need this deep service every 3–4 months regardless of how well weekly maintenance is going.
Component issues found during cleaning are handled correctly, with warranty coverage honored where applicable.
We tell you which service you actually need, not the one that's easiest to upsell.
Cartridge, DE, and sand, so you're not stuck finding a specialist for your specific system.
Familiar with HOA and gated-community access requirements across North Scottsdale neighborhoods.

GOOD Based on 145 reviews Posted on Google Michael SkinnerTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Back in January of this year, I had Captain Pools change out my old sand filter for a cartridge type filter and they did a very good job with that. Over the last couple of months though, I had noticed that the union fitting on top of the pump was leaking a little water during pump operation. Although I don't like ANY leaks, I kept putting it off. Several days ago I called Captain Pools and asked them if they could look at it. Anyway, they arrived today and discovered the fitting was just a little loose so it ended up being a very quick fix. I'm glad they were able to respond quickly to my request, diagnose the issue and fix the problem. I'll continue to use Captain Pools in the future for any problems that arise, and recommend their services for any pool work.Posted on Google Mike DickinsonTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Great weekly price and great service!Posted on Google Rosemary RaysorTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We have used Captain Pools for approximately 6 years, in addition to having them do a full refresh (decking, removal of an old water feature and adding pebble stone). We have been very happy with their service, their communications (i.e. if our technician is out sick or delayed, we are notified) and their fairness. I am able to trust if they tell me a part needs repair / replacement, and they take care of issues timely. Would absolutely recommend Captain Pools!Posted on Google Matt CavendishTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I have had Captain Pools service my pool for 2 years. I have had other companies that lied, did not answer calls, and were very unprofessional. I am completely happy with Captain Pools. They go above and beyond. Prices are very fair Connie James
Most Scottsdale pools need filter cleaning every 3–4 months, though pools near open desert, active construction, or heavy landscaping may need service more often due to elevated dust and debris levels.
Cartridge cleaning involves deep-cleaning the pleated media, DE cleaning includes stripping and recharging the grids with diatomaceous earth, and sand filter service involves backwashing and inspecting the media bed and valve for channeling. Each requires different tools and techniques.
Basic rinsing is possible for cartridge filters, but a true deep clean, and an accurate check for worn components, typically requires full disassembly. DE and sand systems in particular are easy to damage or reassemble incorrectly without experience.
If your filter is showing high pressure, reduced flow, or cloudy water but has no visible damage, cleaning usually resolves it. If you’re seeing cracks, leaks, or a valve that won’t hold position, that’s a repair issue. We’ll confirm which one applies during inspection.
Yes. Filter cleaning can be scheduled as a standalone service or bundled into a recurring maintenance plan alongside weekly pool cleaning. Ask for a quote covering both.
Every pool’s filter condition is different, and pricing depends on filter type, size, and current condition, so we quote every job individually rather than publishing flat rates. Request a free quote and we’ll give you a straight answer on what your filter needs, whether that’s a cleaning, a repair, or both.
